A smoother God of War run starts with the save, completion and progression rules the game does not always explain up front. This guide gives those answers without revealing the plot. God of War is listed for PS4 and PC, with an estimated 40–60h platinum route completion range. It has no major permanent missables in the standard completion route, and there is no major point-of-no-return cleanup trap. Manual saves give you extra control; New Game Plus is available for another run.

PLAYTHROUGH PLAN

Before You Start checklist

5 practical checks
  • Set up your save plan

God of War supports manual saves, so keep a rotating backup before major missions or irreversible choices.

  • Protect the completion route

God of War allows a forgiving standard cleanup route, but tracking optional progress as you go still reduces endgame backtracking.

  • Know the last safe checkpoint

God of War has no major point-of-no-return trap in the normal route, so progress can be paced without hoarding every task for one checkpoint.

  • Choose difficulty deliberately

God of War does not require a specific difficulty for the standard trophy or achievement route, so choose the setting you will enjoy.

  • Budget 40–60h platinum route

Use God of War's 40–60h platinum route estimate as a planning range, not a promise. Exploration, difficulty and optional goals can move the total substantially.

Spoiler-free warning

Nothing required for the platinum is permanently missable, and the world remains open after the story. There is no chapter select, so keep manual saves if you want to revisit specific story moments.

BEGINNER GUIDE

10 things I wish I knew before starting

Spoiler-light · Source-checked

The useful systems, early mistakes and easily missed details worth understanding before you commit dozens of hours.

  1. Gear level matters more than one attractive stat

Enemy colour and difficulty are strongly influenced by Kratos's overall equipment level. A higher-level balanced item can be more useful than a low-level piece with one impressive number.

  2. Use Atreus constantly

Atreus's arrows interrupt enemies, build stun and create openings while Kratos is attacking or recovering. Upgrade his bow and abilities instead of treating the command button as optional.

  3. Recall the axe as part of the attack

The Leviathan Axe can damage or stagger enemies on its return path. Reposition before recalling it and use throws to control distant threats rather than viewing the recall only as retrieval.

  4. Runic attacks are cooldown tools

Light and heavy runic attacks recharge with time instead of consuming a rare permanent resource. Equip complementary effects and use them regularly rather than saving both for an unknown future fight.

  5. Sell artifacts without losing collection credit

Once an artifact has been collected, selling it does not remove its recorded completion progress. Converting completed sets into Hacksilver is safe and helps fund upgrades.

  6. Return when an obstacle has no solution

Some routes and chests require tools gained later in the story. Mark the location mentally or on the map and move on instead of assuming every puzzle must be solved on the first visit.

  7. The lake changes as the story advances

New routes and shorelines appear as the water level changes. Revisit earlier regions and docks because the altered landscape exposes side areas and collectibles that were previously inaccessible.

  8. Nornir chests have local puzzle rules

The runes near each chest correspond to bells, seals or rotating mechanisms in the immediate area. Locate every target before committing to a timed attempt so you can plan the order.

  9. The platinum has no difficulty requirement

Choose the setting that makes combat enjoyable. Give Me God of War has special restrictions, so do not select it merely to protect a trophy that the base list does not require.

  10. Cleanup is safe after the story

Required collectibles and optional bosses remain available in post-story free roam. There is no chapter select, however, so keep a manual save when you want to preserve a particular story moment.
